Chandigarh March 11:
The huge mandate given to Indian National Congress by the people of Punjab with 77 seats in its kitty in the Punjab Assembly Elections 2017, has belied all speculations of neck and neck fight in the media between Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
The much-hyped AAP prospects got an equally massive knock as the party and its ally Lok Insaaf Party (LIP) finally got 22 seats. The same turned out to be the fate of SAD-BJP combine which managed to get 18 and was reduced to the third place in the most fierce triangular contest ever seen in the electoral history of Punjab.
The political experts attribute this victory of Congress Party to Capt Amarinder Singh who has been able to restore confidence among the people and ensure its spectacular win despite alleged factionalism.
With this unique political development Capt Amarinder Singh has emerged as an undisputed and strong leader of Congress Party likely to pave way for national gain in the coming parliamentary elections.
It is interesting to note that the senior leaders of all the parties including Capt Amarinder Singh, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, Sukhbir Singh Badal, Charanjit Singh Channi, Manpreet Singh Badal, Bikram Singh Majithia, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring among others have retained their position as winners while prominent losers include Tota Singh, Daljit Singh Cheema, Sikander Singh Maluka, Sohan Singh Thandal, Anil Joshi and youth Akali leader Raju Khanna.
The Bains Brothers in Ludhiana as usual did not lose their shine and retained their respective Assembly seats in Ludhiana district.
Congress has announced that the meeting of the newly elected representatives will be held on March 12 at Chandigarh to elect the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader. Capt Amarinder Singh who is likely to be named as Chief Minister candidate of the Congress Party has expressed his gratitude to the people of Punjab for reposing faith in the party.
Meanwhile, outgoing Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has also thanked the people of Punjab for giving him the opportunity to serve the state as CM for 10 years. He has also called a meeting at Chandigarh on March 12 to examine the causes of the defeat of his party. AAP Convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has also accepted the verdict of the people of Punjab.
