SUMEDH SINGH SAINI IS NOW
CHANDIGARH on 14th March The Punjab Government has appointed Mr. Sumedh Singh Saini, an IPS officer of 1982 batch, as Director General of Police, Punjab in place of Mr. Anil Kaushik, IPS. It is widely discussed that the decision has been taken to curb the crime and to check the menace of illegal narcotic trade in the border state as the issue raised in the near past by one of the senior police officer of the state.

Mr. Saini, considered to be an honest, dedicated, disciplined and devoted officer, who has proved his mettle as SSP of six districts of Bathinda, Hoshiarpur, Ludhiana twice and was specially chosen for SSP Union Territory Chandigarh. He has played a vital role as police officer during the tension days in Punjab.
It is to be mentioned that Mr. Sukhbir Singh Badal, Deputy Chief Minister, had taken a vow at Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib to launch a concerted drive against drug paddling in the state and Mr. Sumedh Singh Saini would be instrumental in this momentous task.
In another event The Punjab and Haryana high court on Tuesday put the Punjab home department and Union ministry of home affairs (MHA) on notice, seeking their replies on appointment of Sumedh Singh Saini as the state director general of police (DGP). The division bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Mahesh Grover issued the notice after taking cognizance of a petition filed by an NGO, seeking removal of Saini as DGP on the grounds that he was facing criminal charges in a CBI court in Delhi.

Immediately after taking over as DGP Mr. Saini reinstalled Five SSPs of PPS cadre to their previous stations, who were transferred on the orders of the Election Commission while the code of conduct was in place.

Mr. Sumedh Singh Saini soon after took over charge as DGP of Punjab Police, transferring as many as three DGPs and five SSPs who are:
Outgoing DGP Anil Kaushik, who passed on the top Chair to Saini, was shifted to Punjab Police Housing Corporation as CMD, with six months left to his retirement. Rajan Gupta, who was the DG (law and order and PAP) has been posted as DGP Punjab State Human Rights Commission while Sanjeev Gupta, whose personal and professional rivalry with Saini is the worst kept secret in police circles, has been made DGP (security and vigilance) Punjab, Powercom.

On Thursday 15th March morning, Heavy Punjab Police force deputed all along the route from the city's Sector 16 - where Saini's official residence is located -- to the Punjab Police headquarters at Sector 9. A strong security cover was thrown in and around the police headquarters. This was done because Mr. Saini has been a target of terrorist attacks since Punjab's terrorism days and who was injured in a bomb attack in Chandigarh in 1991. He was escorted to the headquarters to take over his new post.
The new DGP, who has been in and out of controversies, within the service he has his detractors as well as ardent followers in equal number besides a dedicated fan following among policemen who fought during terrorism - has been asked to launch a drive to curb crime as well as to go after drug lords in the state.

Saini is known to enjoy the confidence of both CM Parkash Singh Badal as well as deputy CM Sukhbir Badal, who will continue to head the home department -- the controlling authority of police force - for the second consecutive term.

'BJP not consulted- shown their I on newly appointed DGP'
Jalandhar: Within a day of SAD-BJP taking charge of the state, differences seem to have erupted between the alliance partners over the issue of appointment of Sumedh Singh Saini as Punjab DGP with BJP saying that it was not consulted over his appointment. BJP legislature party leader Chunni Lal Bhagat said here on the other day of the appointment that BJP was not consulted on the issue. "We were not taken into confidence and chief minister took the decision on his own," he said. Bhagat said that the BJP would discuss the issue in its core committee meeting.
“Arora away from DGP takeover”
ADGP (intelligence) Suresh Arora, who was also promoted on Wednesday, along with Sumedh Singh Saini, was conspicuous by his absence when the new DGP took over charge on Thursday. Arora was on leave and away to Amritsar, apparently to seek blessings of the almighty on his promotion. Sources close to him however said he expected the move to remove him from intelligence department.
